Last month, we launched our new Sustainability Forum, a platform bringing BusinessLDN members and the Greater London Authority (GLA) together to tackle London’s biggest environmental challenges. We were delighted to welcome Mete Coban, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy, who led our inaugural session.
Our first discussion revolved around one key question: How can London stay on track with its green goals in a rapidly changing world? The capital has plenty going for it – bold leadership, global influence, and broad alignment across Westminster, City Hall, and boroughs. But the challenges are urgent and remain complex. From retrofitting homes and buildings to fast-tracking capital deployment and project delivery, turning ambition into action will demand fresh approaches.
Three core themes emerged from our discussion that will guide our next steps:
Driving the sustainability narrative
Messaging is crucial. While it won’t solve everything, clear and accessible language helps business to cut through the noise – especially the anti-climate rhetoric from the US administration – and connect with consumers in meaningful ways. Secure energy, lower bills, and better air quality: we need to make the benefits feel tangible.
Unlocking investment at scale
Delivering investment at scale requires a strong pipeline of investable projects, developing skills, retooling procurement, and designing funding models that match both the risks and maturity of emerging technologies.
Supercharging collaboration
London has a unique opportunity to turn political alignment into global leadership. Platforms like London Climate Week can amplify London’s voice globally. Leveraging these opportunities strengthens the city’s leadership within C40 Cities and in the lead-up to COP30.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, we’re working closely with the GLA team to shape the forum’s progress. Expect bold conversations, expert insights, and decisive action on a quarterly basis.
