London faces an acute housing shortage. A systemic problem fuelled by years of undersupply is being compounded by further challenges — high cost of construction, limited public finances and an uncertain and complex regulatory landscape are all impacting the residential development’s industry’s ability to deliver homes in the capital.
The challenge of resolving the housing crisis is complex and there is no one solution that can address this problem. There are, however, a set of interventions which the industry and Government can use to help unblock delivery. Local authorities working with the private sector through formalised partnerships, private investment into affordable housing and supporting the emerging Build to Rent sector are just some of the pathways and BusinessLDN, in partnership with our members, has helped to illustrate these through our reports.
More is still needed however and the Mayor’s target of delivering 66,000 new homes each year is not only ambitious but critical if the capital is to secure and retain the talent it needs to survive. In an unprecedented third term, the Mayor has committed to creating a City Hall Developer which will deliver the low-cost homes that’s Londoners need. Working with members across the residential sector, BusinessLDN has provided a private sector perspective on this new entity, its purpose, objectives, and recommendations for how it can boost delivery in London. Our report can be found here.
