We were thrilled to have won the Best Mixed Used Scheme and to have been awarded Highly Commended in the Best Heritage or Culture Project category in the Building London Planning Awards 2022, for the Grade II* listed Power Station, the second phase in the regeneration of the 42-acre Battersea Power Station site.
Sitting derelict for nearly forty years since it was decommissioned in 1983, and after countless failed attempts to restore the building until our shareholders took over the site in 2012, the restoration of Battersea Power Station has now been completed and the Grade II* listed building opened its doors to the public for the very first time in history on 14th October 2022. The Power Station is home to 254 apartments and over 100 shops, bars, restaurants, offices and leisure venues, including Lift 109, a unique glass elevator, which transports visitors to the top of the Power Station’s north west chimney offering stunning views of the London skyline.
Battersea Power Station’s retail offering is housed in the landmark’s two newly restored, historic Turbine Halls, which are completely unique in their interior design. Turbine Hall A reflects the lavish Art Deco glamour of the 1930s when the Power Station was originally built, whereas Turbine Hall B, which was completed in the 1950s, has more of a brutalist, industrial look and feel. Both Turbine Halls are now home to a great mix of British and international brands, including Nike, Adidas, Ace + Tate, ME+EM, Sweaty Betty, Mango, Jigsaw and Uniqlo, as well as smaller more independent retailers such as The Battersea Bookshop, CSD and Curated Makers, which sells homeware, candles, clothing and artwork from over 40 local independent small businesses.
We’ve welcomed over three million visitors to Battersea Power Station since the opening and it’s been incredible to witness thousands of people walk through the Power Station and along Electric Boulevard, our new pedestrianised high street, each day. The new riverside neighbourhood also offers large areas of public realm for members of the public to enjoy and provides a canvas for our annual events programme including the Light Festival and Glide at Battersea Power Station, London’s only riverside ice rink.
Battersea Power Station is also having a positive impact on the wider and local community, with 20,000 new jobs being created, 2,500 from the opening of the Power Station and Electric Boulevard in October 2022. Creating a sense of community has always been important throughout the regeneration of the Power Station and wider area. Since the redevelopment began, we have established strong relationships with the local community through initiatives such as the BPS Community Forum, Battersea Power Station Community Choir, which now has over 100 members, and Power to Connect, a laptop recycling scheme. Since launching during the COVID-19 pandemic, Power to Connect has donated over 2,200 laptops to local families and organisations.
2023 is another exciting year for Battersea Power Station with further shops, bars and restaurants opening inside the Power Station and on Electric Boulevard, including a 24,000 sq ft Arcade Food Hall which will be opening this Spring, and lots more exciting events will be held throughout the year. We very much look forward to welcoming more visitors!
