As BusinessLDN relaunched our flagship London Lunch on the Wednesday at MIPIM, we were joined by leaders from across the public and private sector to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing London’s built environment.
Deputy Mayor Jules Pipe reflected upon this stating that it was an “auspicious moment” for London, and that whilst there are challenges to the delivery of schemes in London they cannot be resolved by deregulation alone.
The Deputy Mayor noted the importance of public private relationships in delivering truly sustainable growth, ensuring that communities are involved in. With the London Plan review on the horizon, the GLA are working to understand where the plan can be streamlined to create the strategic framework that London requires to deliver 88,000 new homes a year.
As Jules noted, the ambition for London is clearly seen in the Mayor’s plans to transform Oxford Street, ensuring that London remains a leading global destination, competing against the likes of Paris and New York. Our host, Misa von Tunzelman, Head of Corporate Affairs & Marketing at Lendlease, echoed this ambition and reiterated the importance of delivering the “best and most diverse places in the world”.
Claire Holland, Chair of London Councils reiterated the importance of public private collaboration in ensuring that London remains the best city in the world in which to do business and championed the role of London Boroughs as “drivers of growth”.
Despite the challenging economic climate for planning and development in London, the room was full of ambition and a growing sense of optimism that London can deliver the homes and spaces it needs to continue to compete on the global stage.
