The term ‘social value’ is one that is growing in prominence in the planning system. Some local authorities are introducing policies that require an appraisal of social value as part of the planning application process and are increasingly referencing it in their deliberations over schemes. This goes much further than the usual planning balance of public benefit versus development impact, but the policy requirements are not yet clear. Many developers are progressing impressive ESG initiatives that support the communities in which they are working, however it is challenging to know how best to demonstrate these through a social value appraisal. This cross-sector industry discussion explores lessons learned so far and how developers and planners can best approach social value to demonstrate development as a force for good.
