Responding to the announcement of plans to give England’s mayors the power to impose an overnight levy, John Dickie, Chief Executive of BusinessLDN, said:
“An overnight stay levy has the potential to benefit London and businesses but only if it is used to promote economic growth and the industry has a meaningful say in how the funds raised are used.
“Great care needs to be taken in shaping the timing and rate of any levy to ensure it doesn’t hit hiring and investment.
“This is especially true given the hospitality and leisure sectors are facing economic headwinds and have faced significant tax hikes in recent years.”
